The Map

There is a God before the names.

Every religion has a name for God. Yahweh. Allah. God. But in the oldest verses of both the Bible and the Quran, the name turns out not to be a name. It is a state. “I am.”

The name carries a covenant — a people, a law, a boundary. The state carries nothing but itself. This dossier maps that difference, follows it through four languages, and shows where the I, Allah, and the I AM come back together as one all-encompassing Creator.

ʾEHYEH ʾASHEH (Hebrew) · EGO EIMI (Greek) · AL-HAYY AL-QAYYUM (Arabic) · HUWA (Arabic) — four languages, one reflexive.

The Named God

Yahweh is a name. A real one.

FIG. 01 — THE BUSH AND THE NAME: the covenant name given at the burning bush

Yahweh is the name God gave Israel at the burning bush. It carries a covenant: a people, a law, a promise. A name belongs to a relationship, and a relationship can be exclusive.

Documented Record “I am a jealous God” (Exodus 20:5). The jealousy belongs to the covenant, to the name. A name is finite, relational, exclusive by design. That is not a small thing — it is how covenants work.

Nothing here says the name is small. It says the name is a name: bounded by the relationship it names.

The Name That Is a State

But listen to what the name actually is.

A self-sustaining circle of golden light feeding itself
FIG. 02 — THE SELF-EXISTENT: a circle that feeds itself, no beginning, no end

Documented Record At the burning bush, God does not hand Moses a label. He hands him a verb: ʾehyeh ʾashēh — “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). No one is describing God. God is describing His own being.

The “name” is a self-affirmation: I am, and that is why I am. Before the covenant, before the people, before the name Yahweh was ever spoken — there is the I AM. The self-existent. The frequency of pure being.

Working Hypothesis Reading ʾehyeh ʾashēh as a state of being rather than a proper name is an interpretation — but it is the reading both the Fourth Gospel and the Quran later build on.

The Hinge

Jesus claims the I AM before Abraham.

FIG. 03 — THE THRESHOLD: “before Abraham was, I am” — the doorway before the covenant

Documented Record The boldest move in the New Testament is four words: “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). Not “before Abraham was, I was.” I am — egō eimi — the same two words God used at the burning bush, in Greek now, spoken by Jesus.

He puts them before Abraham. Before the covenant. Before the name Yahweh had a people.

Documented Record The listeners reach for stones (John 8:59). They understand exactly what is being claimed: not a prophet who is from God, but the God who is before the name. That is the hinge of the whole map.

The Same Word, Other Language

The Quran says it too — in Arabic.

FIG. 04 — THE HIDDEN NAME: hu, the name beyond the names, in light

Documented Record The greatest verse of the Quran — the Āyat al-Kursī — describes God in two words: al-Ḥayy, al-Qayyūm. “The Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining” (Quran 2:255). The One who is, and who stands on nothing, who sustains everything by Himself. Read them together and you have “I AM WHO I AM” in another language.

Documented Record Look at the sentence every Muslim repeats: lā ilāha illā huwa — “there is no god but He.” That “He” — huwa — is the verb “to be.” The name inside the sentence is the state of being itself.

Documented Record The Sufis went one step further: they gave that “He” its own name — Hu — هو — the hidden name, beyond the 99 names of God (al-Ism al-Afsar in the tradition). The 99 names are fingers. Hu is the hand.

The Other Side of the Map

Now the differentiation.

A golden craftsman in a cosmic forge shaping matter
FIG. 05 — THE CRAFTSMAN: the lower architect of the visible world, who claims the whole

Documented Record The Gnostic texts of Nag Hammadi tell the story from the other side. The Apocryphon of John describes the creator of this world as a lower craftsman — in some texts named Yaltabaoth, in others Samael — who stands over his creation and declares, “I am God, and there is no other.” He has a name, a law, a kingdom, and a jealous claim.

Read that against the map, and the two poles line up. The Named God — covenant, law, people, jealousy — is the level of the Demiurge. The Unnamed God — the I AM before the name — is above it.

Working Hypothesis Identifying the Demiurge with the covenant God of the Old Testament is a Gnostic interpretation, not a doctrine of the Bible or the Quran. But the differentiation this map needs is exactly this one: a name versus a state.

The Reunion

The I, Allah, and the I AM are the same.

An all-encompassing golden mandala of unified light
FIG. 06 — THE ALL-ENCOMPASSING: one source, every word held in a single light

Documented Record Four words, four languages, one reflexive: ʾehyeh (I am who am) · egō eimi (I am) · al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm (the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining) · huwa (He). Exodus 3:14. John 8:58. Quran 2:255. The shahaada.

Jesus claims the I AM before Abraham. The Quran attributes self-sustaining life to the One. The Sufis hide it as Hu. The I, Allah, and the I AM are not three gods. They are the all-encompassing Creator, read through two scriptures, with the name taken off.

The I AM is before the name — so the name can be shared. Abraham’s God, Muhammad’s God, and Jesus’ I AM: one God. The map, not the bouncer.

Working Hypothesis The identification is a synthetic reading. The verses are documented; the unity is the argument of this map, and it is yours to test.

Take It In

The I AM is not a name to say. It is a state to be.

Three practices, from the map to the day:

01 · Strip the Name

In prayer, put the name down for one minute. Do not say Yahweh, Allah, or God. Sit in the “I am.” Ask: what is true before my name? That is the frequency you are training.

02 · Before the Name

Every morning, one question: what did I believe before I had a religion, a story, a label? The I AM is before Abraham, before the covenant, before you. Start there.

03 · The Map, Not the Bouncer

Treat every scripture as a map to the I AM — the Bible, the Quran, the Gnostic texts. A map is not the territory, and no map is the gate. The One is before all of them.

Thank you, and I love you.
